Benjamin Elias Sanchez, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, was called home to the Lord on February 16, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on March 22, 1948, in Albuquerque, NM, Benjamin lived a life marked by service, deep love for his family, and a passion for history.
A U.S. Army veteran, Benjamin served his country from September 5, 1967, to September 4, 1970, with a distinguished tour in Vietnam. A combat engineer, he achieved the rank of Sergeant E5 and was honored with several medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, and Purple Heart.
Benjamin’s career in law enforcement began in November 1970, as he joined the Farmington Police Department, where he dedicated twenty years of service and retired as a captain in May 1990.
Education was important to Benjamin, who graduated from Aztec High School in the class of 1967 and earned an Associate's Degree in Law Enforcement from San Juan College.
As a father, Benjamin was a beacon of love and support. He was truly the best father in every way possible, showering his two precious daughters, Maria Danielle Sanchez and Angelica Gabrielle Sanchez, with unending affection. He took them camping, to the movies, and crafted cherished memories filled with laughter and love. His legacy of devotion continued with his grandchild, Kyle Wyatt Golding, who brought immeasurable joy and pride to his life.
Benjamin is survived by his loving mother, Josefa Gregorita Sanchez; daughters, Maria Danielle and Angelica Gabrielle Sanchez; brothers, Oracio, Epifanio, Gregorio, Jose, and Patricio Sanchez; sister, Anita Sanchez; and grandchild, Kyle Wyatt Golding. Also, friend and brother, Dave Christensen. He was preceded in death by his father, Bernardo Sanchez Jr., and his beloved grandparents, Juan Pablo and Maria Adelita Valdez, Bernardo Sanchez Sr. and Josepha G. Sanchez.
A Rosary will be held on February 21, 2025, at Cope Memorial Chapel in Farmington at 6:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Aztec on February 22, 2025, at 10:00 AM, with a Graveside Service to follow at the Aztec Cemetery. Reception to follow at St Joseph’s Parish Hall
We as a family would like to thank all the staff at the New Mexico State Veterans Home for all the love and care they gave our father in his final days.
