Clyde Harland Greene “Butch,” 84 of Aztec, New Mexico passed away peacefully at home on December 24, 2024. Clyde was born on September 2, 1940, in Iowa Park, TX to R.D. and Audie Greene. He was one of six children: 4 boys and 2 girls. Better known as “Butch” to all who knew him; the nickname was something of a mystery, perhaps something that was given to him at an early age. He didn’t mind the name Butch, because when he was a child, he thought Clyde was a bad word, as his mother would only use his birth name when he was in trouble.
Butch began his oilfield career at the age of 15, when he broke out in the West Texas oilfield working as a roughneck for his father R.D. In July of 1957 he met Julia Marie Martin at the Aztec A&W and married his love on October 8, 1957. Butch started working for El Paso Natural Gas in 1958; after suffering a life changing injury in 1987 his career would be altered and eventually Butch was retired by the company. In 1972 he utilized his passion for mechanic work to supplement the family’s income by opening Greene’s Auto Repair. From 1982-1984 Butch and Marie were owner/operators of Aztec Speedway, creating memories and building lifelong friendships. After losing Marie in 2005, Butch would later marry Thida in 2007.
Butch also enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends. He enjoyed watching his grandkids participate in sports, teaching them how to drive and giving them advice on nearly everything. He had an ear for country western music and loved watching his old western movies and TV shows. In the last couple of years, he enjoyed watching his little cowboy Dawson dance and play.
Survived by wife Thida; son Rodney (Libby) Greene; daughter Patti (David) Alexander; grandchildren Linda Greene, Brett (Kammie) Alexander, Heather (Jaysalyn) Alexander, Donald Greene, Jeff (Sabrina) Arinder, Steven Arinder, Tony Tillman and Shaci Tillman; great-grandchildren Brooklynn Dickson, Kyla Schmidlkofer, Madison Arinder, Dayton Arinder, Maverick Arinder and Dawson Alexander; brothers Irvin Greene, Leon (Peggy) Greene, Ronnie (DeLinda) Greene and sister Retha Tyson; brother-in-law Charlie (Sandy) Martin and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Butch is reunited with his parents; wife of 47 years Marie Greene, sister Quova “Sis” and brother-in-law Arlie Nelson, brother-in-law Don Tyson and sister-in-law Sue Greene, brother-in-law Kenneth Martin; Kenny Martin and Scotty Ray Martin and many other friends and family members who welcomed him home.
A viewing will be held at Cope Memorial Chapel in Aztec on January 3, 2025, from 4-7 PM. He will be laid to rest with a graveside service Saturday January 4, 2025; 11:00 AM at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Family and friends are all invited and encouraged to join us after the services are complete for a “bite to eat,” as Butch would say. Park Avenue Elementary in Aztec has kindly opened their doors for the gathering.
His grandchildren will serve as the pallbearers, carrying grandpa to his final resting spot on this earth. A fitting location right next to grandma!
Honorary pallbearers include Rodney Greene, David Alexander, Keith Johnson, John Hank, Tommy Clements, Bill Smart, Mike Greenleaf, Louie Ritter, Rusty Russell and little cowboy.
The family would like to thank Guardian Angel Home Health & Hospice for their amazing care and professionalism during our time of need. We would also like to thank Cope Memorial for their assistance with the arrangements and care of our loved one.
