John David Carpenter went to sleep on Thursday January 2nd, 2025, and never woke up- dying peacefully in his sleep just two weeks shy of his 65th birthday. John was the oldest son of David and Alberta Carpenter. He was born on January 18, 1960, and had three siblings: an older sister Deborah Carpenter Titus, younger sister Dorothy Carpenter Saltzmans, and brother Jimmy Carpenter. His father died in 2000 of cancer, so he moved in with his mother, proud to be her caregiver for the last 20+ years. In a surreal twist of fate, Jimmy also died in his sleep in February 2024 in their mother's house; neither of the brothers had children of their own. His father David had siblings: Danny Carpenter, Dick Carpenter, Sally Carpenter Morris, Sandra Carpenter Hickman, and Dr. Sam Carpenter. Alberta was the daughter of Alberta Harris who had a brother Robert "Buzz" Harris who passed in 2023.
Like his father, John was a master mechanic, who could make any engine run, did the body and paint and loved to restore older cars, motorcycles, and sprit cars. As a young man he raced dirt bikes and sprint cars until the injuries sent him to the pits. He loved to talk racing, watch racing, and help put the racers put the racers back together. John was a kind and gentle soul with a laugh that put people at ease. He didn't like attention but enjoyed seeing the ones he cared for get the attention.
There will be a Catholic Mass for John on Saturday, January 11th, 2025 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Farmington at 10:00 AM.
John has been cremated and the urn burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery on Dustin following Mass, next to his father, David, and brother, Jimmy. There will not be a public gathering after the burial. Condolences can be sent to Alberta at 307 W. Gladden in Farmington in the little house they rented when the kids were young, then bought in the 1980s and rebuilt by David and the boys.
