Richard Montoya, Sr.
Richard Montoya Sr of Torreon/Huerfano, NM has gone onto see the Lord on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at the golden age of 75. Richard was born on March 20, 1946 and raised in Na’neelzhiin, NM, Eastern Navajo Nation. He was 10 of 12 siblings born to the late June Trujillo and Polito Montoya. Ta’neeszahnii nil9 d00 T1chii’nii y1shch77n. Hooghan[1n7 dabicheii d00 T[‘0g7 Kiis’1anii dabin1l7. Richard was a beloved husband to Janice Yazzie-Montoya of 30 years. He was a father to 6 children and grandfather to 10 grandchildren.
He accomplished many things in his life starting with Cuba High School being a state championship runner. He served in the Air Force and was a Vietnam War Veteran. He was a school board member for Na’neelzhinj7 )lta’, Dzi[n1’oodi[ii and Cuba Schools for many years. He was also a Chapter Official for many years, until this past December of 2020. He worked for the Bureau of Indian Education (Na’neelzhiin J7 )lta’), Tribally Controlled Schools (Rough Rock Community Schools, Han11dl9 Community School/Dorm, Inc.), Central Consolidated School District (Kirtland, Newcomb) and Ziems Ford Corners as Security Guard.
He became a Pastor in 2001 along with his wife, Janice. They have been Pastors of Han11dl9 Fountain of Life Church (Huerfano Community) for the past 20 years. He helped build the HFoL church spiritually, physically and financially from its infancy. He has made a big impression on many people with counsel and guidance from the Word of God. He loved the Lord and served Him whole heartedly for 35+ years.
Richard is survived by his wife, Janice Y. Montoya, 6 children and 10 grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 3 sisters. He will be dearly remembered as a steadfast and devout Christian, an inspirational father, a strong community leader, and a brilliant hardworking husband, father, and a loving grandfather.
His funeral service was held on Monday, May 3, 2021 at Han11dl9 Fountain of Life church. He was laid to rest at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
